A Debut in Concrete

The first built work of the 2025 AIA San Diego Young Architect of the Year.

Matthew Segal has been watched, argued about, and awarded before anyone outside of the profession knew his name. The Arista Residence is the first of his designs to reach the open market — a 4,413-square-foot concrete residence in Mission Hills that brings California modernism into deliberate conversation with Brutalist weight.

Where most modern homes in San Diego reach for lightness, Arista leans into mass. Concrete, wood, and considered light are the primary materials, and the experience of the home depends on how they meet. Walls that should feel heavy carry warmth. Rooms that should feel sealed open, instead, to the courtyards and mature trees that anchor the site.

Material & Light

A home built on the tension between permanence and openness.

The concrete is site-poured and honest — left to read as what it is, rather than dressed as something else. Wood elements do the quieter work: softening edges, warming the floors, carrying the eye across transitions between inside and out. Lighting is handled with architectural restraint, hidden where it should be, framing the spaces it touches without announcing itself.

Courtyards carve the plan into a series of smaller, related rooms. Transparency is deliberate. A primary living space that could have been closed up is, instead, permeable — visually connected to the courtyard beyond, which in turn is connected to the trees above it.

"Tailored for those pursuing a standout modern retreat — a piece of emerging architectural history in one of San Diego's most sought-after neighborhoods."
The Neighborhood

Mission Hills, above the city.

Mission Hills sits on one of San Diego's best-kept topographic advantages: a ridge that rises above Mission Valley and the bay, close enough to downtown to matter, far enough to feel like a neighborhood rather than a district. Arista is among the first new-construction architectural statements to land here in a generation.

Walk to Washington Street's restaurants. Ten minutes to Little Italy, fifteen to the airport, twenty to La Jolla. The location was chosen before the design was drawn — and the design treats the location as a collaborator, not a backdrop.
